Editing

This blog contains our groups' editing process of our ad project (most of the editting were done by Tisha, though our group talked a lot about it and I personally gave so much feedback on a bunch of little details too!)

Editing

Problem 1:

In the first scene we filmed, we were still getting used to filming and acting on camera. This uneasiness led us to forget how to properly transition from one shot to another. Because of the sudden cut when transitioning from one shot to the other, we decided to add two black screens to add a cool effect and blend the shots together. In this video, Cassie was shown to be sleepy and drowsy, and this black out effect somehow matches with her sleepy expression, therefore the transition works well.

Problem 2:

Turns out when we were recording one of our scenes, which is this running scene, we accidentally recorded it in slow-mo. This affected our results but we were able to change it to be normal speed by changing the speed of our video. Because of this change, you can’t even tell that the video was once in slow motion.

We were figuring out a font type that would look good in our video and this is what we agreed on that day, but we changed it again later on into a different font to match with our playful theme .

Here, Tisha decided to make the colours on all the food different so add variation and liven up our ad to stick with the “youthful” and playful theme. Cassie chose the exact colours and shades to make it stand out and not blend in with the background.

Originally, we added the prices of the food and the other items/activities in standard american dollars. However, in our first scene, we take out our wallets and pull money out. We didn’t have american dollars on hand, but Tisha had australian dollars. We figured using australian money and converting prices to australian dollars would target australians, (as there are more Australians, in statistics, known to visit Bali more likely than Americans) so that's how we changed our demographic.

1st Video Draft | 6 September 2024

https://youtu.be/HnjnQQwqXiE?si=uj2xtQoAezYugiVl

During our editing on this day, our teacher saw our video in order to check our progress and he gave comments on what we should do to make it look better.

The ideas our teacher gave us to improve our advert are visualized and shown above.

—————

2nd Video Draft | 12 September 2024

https://youtu.be/uaxhEiTkLA8

In this draft, we have yet to film the first scene or add music to our advert. Music was a big feature of our advert as we did not have a script, so we needed to choose a good song that matched our theme.

We had narrowed it down to 3 songs/instrumentals:

  1. One thing - One Direction

  2. Borderline - Tame Impala

  3. Attention 250 Remix - NewJeans

We ended up choosing and using the instrumental of One thing by One direction, as it had a calm start then built up to a fun and cheerful chorus, which was exactly what we needed.

One Direction is also a very popular band amongst teens all over the world, and we have similar target audiences. This was another reason why we chose this song.

In this part of the scene, we wanted to include a shot of the monkey and the monkey forest sign. We took a close up shot as shown in the first photo above. However, when we made the text bigger (so the viewers can see it better), the monkey got completely covered. So, we changed it to a medium-long shot, still including monkeys and the sign.

3rd Video Draft | 13 September 2024

https://youtu.be/sHwniPKOemQ

After finishing this draft, we asked opinions from our classmates on our advert. We took their suggestions and made small changes to our ad. Overall, we agreed it looked better after the changes.

Above, is a screenshot of a suggestion our friend made that we took and put into the ad.

Problem 3:

Via suggestions from our friend, we realised that it was quite difficult to tell that Cassie was dreaming in the video. So, our friend offered some solutions to this problem. Tisha switched the walking and firework scenes and added a longer fade after. We found that this made the video more “dream like” as it had a false ending. It was now much easier to tell that Cassie was dreaming.

Font development

(This part is copy and pasted from Cassie’s research blog)

My team and I experimented with a wide variety of fonts via the Canva App, which provided many free font options to choose from. It was convenient as Canva allowed my whole team to work on the image above at the same time. We ultimately felt like all these fonts were boring on their own, and didn’t capture the tone we wanted to convey. That’s when I thought to combine two fonts together to create a more engaging design. Here is the idea I came up with:

This font combination struck us as both aesthetically pleasing and purposeful. The top font, with its "handwritten" feel, evokes a personal and casual vibe, similar to what we would expect from a student's handwriting. This informal, playful tone gives it a sense of authenticity to our target audience of students. Its playful and approachable design creates a sense of fun and youthfulness, something we wanted to emphasize in the ad. 2 out of 4 group members preferred this font out of the many fonts we had tried out, as it aligned with our vision of creating a friendly, relatable tone.

In contrast, the bottom font has a more sophisticated and elegant style. Its appearance conveys professionalism and a sense of  flow, which pairs well with the cultural and natural beauty of Bali. This connotation of refinement helps reinforce the idea of Bali as both an exciting and enriching destination, perfect for students looking for affordable yet memorable experiences.

Together, these two fonts create a dynamic contrast—balancing playful energy with elegance. This distinction separates the two different sections of the message but also prevents the design from feeling bland. The variation in style ensures that the ad remains visually engaging, while also reinforcing the dual message of fun, affordable experiences with a touch of uniqueness, making it appealing and memorable for the audience.

In the end, this is how our call to action and final frame in our ad looked like.

Self Reflection: Tisha and Cassie were the ones that mostly worked on this blog for the group to agree on and paste to our own individual blogs, however in class I have been the one with the most suggestions when Tisha edits during class sessions, with smaller details such as transitions, positioning of the writings, some of the writings' colors, sound effects, and even a scene positioning change. And i personally think we all did a great job and have definitely satisfied ourselves with Tisha's editing.

Behind The Scenes

This blog contains the behind the scenes during our filming schedule.

Scene 1: Beach Scene - Behind the scene

On the day we filmed our beach scene, we were very unprepared. I forgot my cardigan at school which affected my character’s appearance and costume. However, the shots still ended up looking nice and cohesive, so in hindsight it wasn’t that big of a problem.

Before we started filming we had some food where it gave us an idea to add into our video. It also matches our concept of our video theme which is on a budget because the food (Bakso) was only around 15k Rupiah.

In this photo, we can see Tisha was looking for a good angle to shoot the video.

Figuring out how I should hold the camera for the shot.

This was the behind the scenes of the beach scene, which we filmed first. There was a shot that required the whole team in the frame, however we didn’t bring an “extra” person to be the cameraman, as we couldn’t find any mutual friends available on that day. So, we asked this nice stranger nearby if she could film us for a specific shot. She kindly agreed, and we got permission to take and put this photo in our blog. However, she requested her face to be covered.

Scene 2: Monkey Forest Scene - Behind the scene

On the day of filming for the monkey forest scene, we all were tired as we had just finished the school week. However, we loaded up with snacks in the car and that help to liven up our energies so we could put on a good expression for our video.

In this video, we used a POV shot in order to make it more relatable for our audience.

Us on the way to the monkey forest!

Classwork

In this blog post, i will state out what I've learnt in class.

Camera Shots and Angles

Camera angles are the position of the camera in relation to the subject being filmed. The placements of the camera can affect how the subject is perceived by the audience. Different camera angles and camera movements have different connotations that can affect how audiences may feel.

12 types of camera angles:

1. Long shot - a long shot frames the subject from a distance and focuses on its surroundings showing the details of the subject in the location.

2. Extreme long shot - a full length shot of the subject while also including a large amount of the surrounding area of the film setting.

3. Medium shot - a medium show shows the character from the waist to the top of the head with equal ratios of the character and the location it is in, telling the audience to be focusing on both important aspects.

4. Cowboy shot - a cowboy shot frames the subject form the mid-thigh to the top of their head, it is usually used to reveal a weapon that the character is holding.

5. Close up - a near shot from the subject to draw the audiences attention to the subject or object and show an important part of the subject or object.

6. Extreme close up - a very near shot of a subject or object, that focuses on an extremely important part of the subject or object that the audiences should clearly see.

7. POV - shows what the character is looking at in a first person perspective (the character's perspective, shot on eye level).

8. Over the shoulder - camera angle that is placed on the back of the shoulder and head of a subject to show a conversation happening between two characters/subjects

9. High angle - camera shots bellow on the subject from above that makes subject below seem powerless or weak.

10. Low angle - it is when the shot is taken from below and pointing up. this can be used to make a subject appear to be larger, taller or more powerful.

11. Dutch angle - when camera angle is tilted, that gives the audience an effect of uneasiness or disorientation.

12. Establishing shot - an extremely wide shot of a landscapes, that shifts into another location that tells the audience where the next scene is at.

In class, we had an activity to do where we created mini posters and each pair had a different camera angle to describe and draw, just to remind ourselves more about camera angles and simply to review whenever we are in class. Me and Kim were given the Establishing Shot.

This was a video that my teacher shared to us (me and my classmates) to gain a better understanding of camera angles, also by getting examples form movies which may be more relative for us to understand easier. This totally helped a lot for me to remember.

Camera Movement
In class, we did not just learn about camera shot and angles, but also camera movements and how different camera movements generate different connotations and effects towards the audiences.

These are a list of camera angles we've learnt in class

Storyboards
A storyboard is a visualization of a drawing of scenes that will be on the film which gives an idea and acts as a blueprint of a rough draft on what the film would result to. This helps directors to plan and know how they want to generate the film.
Here is an example of a storyboard we made in class as a practice:

Sound
There are three types of Sound we've learnt in class:
- Diegetic Sound: sound that can be heard by the characters within the media text. It adds a sense of realism and reveals information to the characters and audience
- Non-diegetic Sound: sound that can only be heard by the audience. It enhances meaning and creates more emotional response in the audience.
- Trans Diegetic Sound: sound that transitions from diegetic to non-diegetic or vice versa. It creates a link to the audience of the film to the world and it makes the scenes more immersive.

Non Diegetic Sounds also contain more subtopics or tones such as
- Melodic : Positive and pleasing (happy) in connotations that enhances more positive scenes also creating positive emotions towards the audience.
- Discordant : Negative and unpleasant in connotations that enhances negative energy in scenes and creates suspense, tension and anxiety towards audiences.
- Contrapuntal :Opposing tone toward on-scene visuals which adds a deeper meaning to scenes and creates wider insights into the character's thoughts, and example would be an chance that the character (psycho) seeks pleasure in doing negative actions.

Mise en Scene
Here are the 12 elements of Mise en Scene or known to be "everything we see in a scene/frame"

During class, we also did two activities where my group and I had to draw and give a brief description about a situation and the Mise en Scene to it. And for the other activity, we had to list out as much Mise en Scene from different movie characters given to us!

Our teacher also shared us this video to give us a better understanding of what Mise en Scene is
(which i cant seem to input from Blogspot)

Edit
The process of selecting, arranging and manipulating footage to create a cohesive and engaging story. (post production)

There are types of takes / cuts that we've learned:

Long take:
- feels slow
- build suspense
- extends the feelings
- more immersive

Short take / quick cut:
- increase pace
- high energy / excitement
- action
- focus on detail

There are two types of editing that we learned:

Continuity Editing:
- Straight cut (cut)
- Eyeline match
- Shot / reverse shot
- Cutaway / inset
- Match cut

Non Continuity Editing:
- Cross cut (parallel cut)
- Flash back
- Flash forward
- Jump out
- Match cut

Self Reflection: Overall I think the lessons we had in class we're really useful for our Ad Project and has helped us a lot with our extended understanding of the Media Industry, the terms, and how filming works from the pre-production phase, up to the post-production phase. I hope this will continue to help me do well during exams.
